Among the list of fresh water lakes in Kenya is Lake Naivasha. The name Naivasha was derived from a Maasai word Nai’posha to mirror the storms and the rough movement of the water that happens from time to time. The Lake gets its water from Gilgil and Malewa rivers. It is located 6,181 feet high of the rift valley and it is 20 feet deep. In the surroundings are two small lakes namely; Sonachi and Oloden which make the view more spectacular.

One outstanding feature of Lake Naivasha is the wildlife that it hosts most of them being birds, Fish, buffalos, monkeys, zebras, giraffes and hippos. Most of these animals find their home in the thick forest that surrounds the Lake. The annual migration of wild beasts from Tanzania to Maasai Mara between August and October is one of the tourist’s attractions both locally and internationally. The lake is surrounded by fertile land where a lot of horticulture is done by the neighboring communities. In the vicinity is the Elsamere garden where visitors can relax which was home to Joy Adamson who was a wildlife activist together with her husband George Adamson.

The main activities for this destination are boat riding to appreciate the lake and the fish life and hippos thereof, bush walking to view other animals such as giraffes and nature walks to appreciate the surroundings. The best season to visit Lake Naivasha is during the hot seasons in Kenya. Another interesting feature in the shores of this Lake is the Esamere museum which is a fond reminder of Joy and George Adamson the famous wildlife activists both in Kenya and globally. This couple made news when they took in an orphaned lion and raised it until it was able to go back to the forest. This resulted in the production of a movie named Born Free. It is therefore a great opportunity to learn the history of this couple and their achievements in this field. Their home has also continued to attract international tourists since the couple described Lake Naivasha as the perfect home destination.
