Deserted Gem in the dessert!!

Who would have thought that one would engage in fly camping in a dessert? Mwingi town is one of the driest towns in Kenya and can be seen to have nothing attractive in it at least that was my opinion about the town until I visited the Mwingi National Reserve. Located in the Kitui County, this undiscovered destination is an oasis of tranquility for any tourist who steps here. The hot weather in this area makes it very easy to do fly camping at nights as one admires the wildlife in the reserve and the stars.

This park is bordered by the Kora National Reserve and the Meru National Park which allows for free movement of animals in the three reserves. The view of these animals is mind blowing and they include elephants, hippos, leopards, antelopes, lions and many more. The guides in this place give intense history of the animals and their characteristics which is very instrumental for any tourist. Bird watching is another adventurous activity to engage in while in this destination and learn their different habits and traits.

Given that this reserve is next to the Tana river, this is the icing in the cake .Tourists are able to enjoy a swim in the river, enjoy diving into the water, do fishing and enjoy a boat ride in the river. Additionally, the Adamson’s Falls which are within the reserve it is a spot that every tourist should visit in this destination. The flow of water gives an exquisite experience to everyone who comes close. To culminate your experience in this destination, it would be good to partake in a horse ride and camel safari in the dessert which gives an illusion of the Dubai safari walks.

Charges for the Park are as follows:

Citizen Resident Non-Resident
Adults KSHChild KSHAdults KSHChild KSHAdults USDChild USD
3001256003502213

Directions to the Park:

Though the roads to this place are not so good, the Kitui County government is doing its best to see that this changes in the future.

By Road: From Nairobi drive to Thika then from there head on to Mwingi then go through the Kyuso village to the Reserve.

Alternatively; From Nairobi had on to the Meru National Park and from there you can access the reserve easily.
