Officially gazette and opened in October 1995 with a sole purpose of creating a corridor route for elephant migration between Shimba Hills, Tsavo National Park and Mwaluganje Forest Reserve. The sanctuary is home to one of the densest concentrations of elephants on the continent, actually over 150 in number. The elephants use this migratory passageway to access important foliage areas within their natural domain at different times of the year. The elephant paradise measures around 60,000 acres and supports threatened lowland coastal forest, which contains a rich diversity of flora and fauna including several rare and endemic species.
Magnificent herds of elephants on a normal day, can be seen roaming their territory and tousling each other with tusks and trunks. Extended herd family reunions take place each year heralded by loud trumpeting and calves playing. As one of the Big Five species, more often Elephants are always ranked high on people’s wish list especially for first time and seasoned tourists in Kenya. Then, this sanctuary is the place to go and watch out for,,,,It gives you an experience like no other as one will be able to view at a close proximity bull elephants and more so being in a relative remote area implies that, one is unlikely to have to share them with many other tourists…… Wow, what a phenomenon, no one should actually be left behind, it’s a view of a lifetime…..
The most interesting part is that, since the sanctuary is 36 square kilometer and the fact that it shares the same ecosystem as the reserve, one is treated to an extended experience, globally, known to be as one of the top 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world, which means you get to experience both the forest reserve and the magnificent scene at the sanctuary,,,Where else, will you get such an explicit, memorable and enjoyable experience…killing two birds with one stone….
Apart from the amazing and memorable bull elephants, the sanctuary is known for its waterways shaded with indigenous trees covered in undulating plains, cliffs and the rocky outcrops complemented with 23,736 ha Mkongani forest on the North, termed as the last of the World’s Coastal rain forest and home to the ancient Cycad plant species dated back to 300 million years ago are easily recognized by their distinct fan shape. The other two notable and natural landmarks at the sanctuary are ‘God’s Bridge’ and the ‘Time Rock’, eager to know why they are named so, make an effort to visit the sanctuary and find out for yourself…..
