MIDA CREEK

Stretching inland from the Indian Ocean is a true hidden treasure; Mida Creek. The 32 square kilometers is surrounded by extensive mangroves lined up with palms that traps sediment, healthy beds of 11 seagrass,33 seaweed species, benefiting coral reef that provide an important habitat for millions of aquatic life that includes variety species of fish. The paradise is a stopover point for many migratory birds and an essential protected area for their survival. The place is best explored by boat or if you are a good swimmer then you can opt for that too. At sunset, through the reflection of the sun turns the water to gold which in turn attracts flocks of roosting birds in the sky.

Apart from the amazing and magnificent environment, its an incredible place for kayaking with endless small channels and passages through the mangroves that enables one to explore and see where kingfishers hunt in shallow waters and fish eagles perch in the overhead trees, also paddling in the boat or one can get a guided float through the waters of the creek in a life-vest propelled by gentle tidal currents. Its also ideal for waterskiing and wakeboarding.

The open areas of the creek and the mangrove channels are a feeding and breeding ground for aquatic life especially fish species that include: jacks, snappers, groupers, rabbit fish, parrotfish, emperors and the barracuda. The paradise is not only recognized as one of the most successful mangrove forests on the planet, but also as an International Bird Area as well acknowledged as part of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve shared with Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. It could not be the way it is without the support of the amazing Agiriama people who live next to the creek and are committed to the maintenance of the boardwalk for birdwatchers and offering accommodation to those keen on experiencing the local way of life.

Indeed, it is a place where the creeping marriage of land and water is epitomized by combination of mangrove forest and the salty, fresh scent of wind hoovering over an estuary……The paradise is at its best to visit  at dawn, sunset, and in the clear evenings when the stars rain down on you…You should look out for it….
